Hey guys,

Thought I would post my developing concept for my fourth (actually 6th) holonomic drive. I've decided to go with the three wheeled drive, something I've wanted to build for a while.

For some strange reason the height of this base is important. The goal is to fit the entire robot under a three inch tall object, which isn't particularly easy. Additionally, as always, weight, speed and style are important personal factors for me.

This design is intended for Round Up but I really cannot promise if it will ever be built. I have a tendency to change my mind and start over. I'm also not entirely sure if PTD will compete this year, and of course the silly helicopter idea is still floating around but not looking good at this moment.

Anyway, right now this is just a generic base. Comments, suggestions, etc. appreciated.

Here's what happened:
I had 2 encoders plug in adjacent digital ports. (Using RobotC)
When configured like this a simple program such turning the motors on then off when a bumper is pushed will freeze leaving the motors running and the remote screen gives up a "Failure to read brick status" message.
Turning the controller off and then on to reboot the program will find the motors still running.
Trying to re-download the program fails.
Then the VexNet link fails either wifi or tethered (tried to relink via the tether).
My Joystick is sitting read with the Robot LED blinking slow green and the controller Game LED blinking fast green and I am unable to access the controller in any way.

This happened once before and after leaving it alone for a couple of days I turn the units on to find the link established.

I experimented and found that the adjacent encoders were causing (or one of the causes) the problem.

Batteries are good. Five years with Vex. An experienced programmer. But stuck on this one & left with inoperable equipment.

I install the default program in the Cortex and the system (motors and servos) works fine in all respects, which indicates all the hardware and at least the default program software works OK.

However, if I build a simple program for a robot, anything I program to the right joystick (1) works fine, but nothing seems to work on the left joystick (2).

I have even built a program with only one joystick motor, first on the right joystick and it works OK. I then just changed the joystick number to 2 and the channel number to three, reload the program, but nothing works.

What am I doing wrong?

Why did Vex just release two new types of motors (393 and 269) which are both 2-wire but release a new micro controller (Cortex) that only has two 2-wire motor ports?

Is the Cortex controller just part of a transition from 3-wire to 2-wire?

Are we going to see all 2-wire motors and motor ports anytime soon? (i.e. Is there going to be another microcontroller that has all 2-wire motor ports?)

I am just wondering because if we buy 6 new motor 269s and the new Cortex along with our 4 recently purchased high strength motor 393s, we will need to have 8 motor controller 29s. It seems like a lot of money to get new stuff just to have to convert to old ports.

Thanks in advance for any help.
