Only one instance of the case. Like Vex Mundi already said, copying can be quite effective. An extreme case would be 8192 from Clean Sweep who took a Rangitoto design from the very beginning of the year and won the World Championship with it.

no those teams only won their division, and won the design award. 8192A was a chinese team that had a robot that was basically just like team 2901A. This robot allied with teams 2921 and 2919 and won the world championship in 2010.

Clean Sweep Man is right, the "Chinese poofs" used 254A's design which was the top roller intake with pneumatic basket. 8192A had an extremely simple but well optimized shovel-bucket robot. They improved on Rangitoto's design from probably the first scrimmage in the season and had amazing driving.
