Coaching is interesting. I finally understand why Jordan coaches the way he does. It is painful not to be involved.
I have driven the robot every year I have been in VEX so I had no clue what I was doing.
Volunteering is probably a more noble cause though. I had a nice chat this year with some of the field techs over who they thought I should look at to pick in alliance selection :D. All the volunteers are just amazing.
I think if I tried coaching, I would end up being far too aggressive. I’d have to train pretty hard to suppress emotions to be even marginally useful XD
Thats when you get a driver with tunnel vision who doesn’t listen
Personally, I don’t like to coach alone, I always double up on coaches, easier to do all the jobs that way.
We let Kevin make all the decisions, one coach was pretty much just for match loading, and I spectated from the driver station. All jobs done with 0 actual coaches
1492A did this, at least. I was the secondary coach who mainly kept track of the opponents and helped our alliance partners since our primary coach told our driver what to do. This worked especially well in eliminations since 2921B had only one coach and one driver.
As for the reveal/season-ending-message-thingy, I <3 our team. My teammates work ridiculously hard both in robotics and out (just ask where our seniors are going to college) and make it super easy to have fun at the same time. I’m going to miss them all and their toleration of my sass next year (except the two going to the same college as me).
Totally forgot what thread I was in, this is exactly how a reveal should be done though! Very nice, awesome robots, and even better performance. Thanks for sharing all of this information.
Thank you! With more than half of our team graduating, I thought this reveal would be a nice parting gift from us, filled to the brim with information. I could spout on for another 2000 words about the intricacies of just these two robots, but I thought that might be pushing the “a tad excessive” threshold.
If you really thought you could/wanted to, I’m sure plenty of people would read it. Just put it up on google docs or something if you’re worried about excessive within this thread.
Me and my team (2921B, Free Range Robotics) chose 1492A as our first pick in alliance selection. We went on to win our division and finish 4th in the round robin. These guys are so great! It was wonderful working with you as our alliance.
Their robot was pretty good too.
Haha, that’s an understatement Their robot was incredible, and all the little features it had blew me away. Like the detail that went into the rubber bands on the lift, the “locking” of the six bars as they reached full height, and of course, the expanding X drive.
We wish you all the best at university, and we hope to meet again at the World Championships!
It’s been great meeting you both on the web and in person George! I’m glad that we finally got to work with Free Range instead of just admiring from a distance
Thanks for choosing 1492A as your first pick, it was an honor and a blast working with you, Ethan and your ridiculously good scout(s) to take home the Arts division! Good luck to you in Toss Up!
Two great robots from WASABI this year. And such a wonderfully detailed reveal for them both.
Congratulations on both teams’ success this season. Being one of only two organizations to have two teams in the Round Robin Tournament at the World Championship is very impressive.
It has been great talking to you, Kevin, as well as some of the other members of WASABI on the Skype chat, as it was meeting you in person at the World Championship.
If you do go to the World Championship this season, I hope to see you there again! Either way, I wish you and your other graduating team members the best wherever you plan on going to college.
Thanks Jordan! Even though you had some tough luck in the qualifications and had to take on some really tough world-class teams in the division finals, your robot was absolutely amazing. Thanks for letting me drive your robot on the practice fields and for reminding me how bad I am at driving tank XD
Murdomeek is exactly correct, here is the quote from the original post:
To expand upon the explanation further, 1492A wanted the ability to strafe for better maneuverability as well as the ability to strafe along a trough while descoring to clear it extremely quickly instead of having to realign to take a second chomp.
I also managed to miss this post when you first posted it and I just noticed now, so I apologize for that.
Thanks for the praise, we try our best to combine things we like about robots we see from around the world but also throw our own unique mechanisms into the mix to improve upon the original design.
As for 1492Z, like my teammate WasabiRyan said, a reveal is not likely for multiple reasons. 1492Z had a tough run of luck leading up to and at the competition, but thanks for your interest!
