2013 Pan Pacific VEX Robotics Championship

Aloha teams!

The 2013 Pan Pacific is just days away.

A tremendous MAHALO to our sponsors who are making this event possible:
Oceanic Time Warner Cable, aio Foundation, Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), Hawaii Convention Center, Projection Presentation Technology, Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF), and VEX Robotics

This year, we will attempt an ambitious match schedule which would provide for 8 matches per team. In order to accomplish this, matches will begin on FRIDAY evening. With 104 teams having 8 matches, there will be 208 qualification matches in total from Friday evening through Sunday morning. It is imperative that all teams be prepared for their matches and not hold up the match schedule. Should we begin to fall behind, teams may be reduced to 7 matches per team and 182 matches total. Any drastic delays could result in further loss of matches for teams. Notification will be given during the event should any reduction in matches be required.

Each team will be allowed a maximum of three attempts for Robot Skills and three attempts for Programming Skills. Priority will be given to those teams that have made fewer attempts. Teams in line after 12:30 pm on Sunday will not be accommodated. Teams that are within the top 30 of the World Skills Rankings for Robot Skills and Programming Skills as of March 3, 2013 will receive invitations to the 2013 VEX World Championship.

OTHER INFORMATION

Fields - Many thanks to various schools who are making their fields and game elements available for the event without which the Pan Pacific would not be possible. In previous years, the main competition fields were raised 32" off the ground. With elementary schools now participating, the height of the main competition fields will be dropped by half to 16".

Webcast and live scores - There will be NO webcast for this event and scores may not be updated to the web during the event itself.

Good Luck Teams coming from the only team (Spyder 1622) representing the continental united states

WOOT WOOT

This weekend’s match list is now available here:

http://goo.gl/3Mkjp

Bit of interesting history - 'Iobotics has won PPC every season except 2010, and always as the second alliance pick of two teams from the same program.

08-09 champions: 687J, 687K, 2438
09-10 champions: 254A, 254C, 254B (wrecked the trend, terrible ;))
10-11 champions: 254A, 254B, 2438B
11-12 champions: 1973A, 1973B, 2438A

Good luck to all the teams competing. Maybe this will be the year where three different programs ally to win (gasp)!

Hmm… Anyone has any updates or doing a summary for Pan Pacific?

Yeah, I got it:

High School Excellence: 368A, McKinley High School
Middle School Excellence: 394, Highlands Intermediate School
Champions: 1378, Hilo Viking Robotics
Champions: 1056B, Waiakea High School Robotics
Champions: 1973D, Mililani High School
Finalists: 3685A, Waianae High School: Searider Robotics
Finalists: 7949B, China Bot, Affiliated to Northeast Normal University of Jilin
Finalists: 4109, 808 Robotics
Design Award: 4194B, Taipei American School
Robot Skills Champions: 359A, Waialua Robotics
Programming Skill Champions: 359A, Waialua Robotics

And to respond to bellpride’s history lesson, no, `Iobotics didn’t win this year. Or ally with two other teams from the same program. Actually, we didn’t even qualify for the elimination rounds… guess that’s what happens when all four team captains sit out the tournament.

(None of our four captains participated in Pan-Pacific this year. Kyle Flores, lead designer and builder of last year’s VEX bot, was alternately volunteering as a robot inspector and desperately working in our machine shop back at school to finish our FRC bot. Spencer Wakahiro, administrative captain, was running the skills fields. I myself, typically the field coach, volunteered as a match commentator and announcer. Courtney Otani, this year’s VEX lead and another field coach, sat out so that our younger members could get some field experience.)

The event went off remarkably well. A big thank you to all of the volunteers, especially to Mr. Tui who ran the event so smoothly that we were right on schedule the whole way through. If there’s one thing I could’ve changed, it would’ve been the event timing–putting this right after FRC season meant most local teams were driving their robots for the first time in two months and many had been working without their top builders focused on VEX–but I understand why things had to be scheduled the way they were and that’s really a very minor quibble.

Shout outs!

394 (Highlands): I cannot fathom why no one picked you for eliminations. Seriously, whyyyyyyyy
1622 (Spyder): Thanks for coming all the way from the mainland! Sorry I kept getting your name wrong…
2460 (Kohala): I got really excited every time I saw you guys were in one of my matches because I knew it’d be exciting and there’d be great cheering!
3685A (Searider): Just absolutely terrific sportsmanship by you guys, on top of the great robot. Can’t wait to see you at FRC and hopefully Worlds!
4129A (Ka Waihona): You really earned that award. Fantastic robot, great driving, and wonderful spirit.
4194 (Taipei American School): Your flip-out expanding drive train was like the coolest thing ever. Ever.
All teams from China: Thanks for being so prepared and helpful on the field! If you see me again, I promise I’ll count down the autonomous mode in Mandarin…
All teams from Lihue: your cheering sections were awesome. As an announcer, you guys really helped me to stay energetic!
Everyone in the audience: Thanks for laughing (groaning?) at all my terrible science jokes!

Hope to see you again next season as a volunteer… or, ah, maybe a litte bit sooner (spoilers…!)
