2021-22 is the season for 3D printing!

I’m not sure why the judges would care about your 3D parts, other than reading about them in your engineering notebook. It would be the inspector (usually a referee) who would have to figure this out under the scenario.

But, to throw my two cents in, I would think RECF could simply apply the original limited 3D printing rules from VEX-U, giving a maximum size and number of parts allowed, and leave it at that. I don’t know that there’s particular benefit to file sharing or design sharing, since you can make a parts from legal plastics and don’t have to share designs or files on those, and as an inspector, I certainly wouldn’t want to have to deal with looking at records.

This isn’t necessarily true. I have designed parts meant to be universal and easy to use for different designs. Now this is VEXU where you have multiple bots, but it’s not hard to design pieces that can be easily adaptable to different bots.

Personally, I want 3d printing to be allowed in VRC whether teams are required to share parts files or not. I would still design and use 3d parts whether I was required to share the parts files or not. However, that doesn’t mean I like the idea.

I love having things be open source. I like that there are tutorials to do just about anything online, that there are large public code, and 3d printed parts repositories. There are reveals for just about every top competitive Vex robot from the last 5 or so seasons. I’ve even compiled information such as this for people to use within my club. The problem is not that there aren’t resources out there for people to learn off of, the problem is that people either don’t know where to look, aren’t motivated to try and learn from these resources, or aren’t even confident that they will learn from them.

Requiring each team to share their 3d printed parts files does nothing to help introduce people into designing their own parts in my opinion.

Personally, I don’t particularly care about another team using my design, why last year my team adopted a strict “Leek Everything Policy,” because we thought the value of getting our number out there was greater than keeping our designs to ourselves.

However, I strongly dislike the idea of forcing every team to share their 3d printed parts files. If I am forced into sharing my parts before I get to a competition, who am I actually designing for, my team, or the entire vex community. Why would I ever want to go the extra mile if all my work was going to be given to everyone else when I’m finished. Nobody would ever try to make a special 3d printed drivetrain transmission for their robot if all the days they spent designing it was time spent, not for their team, not for their club, but for everyone.

(I do not speak for them, this is purely assumption) Why would Pilons ever begin working on odometry if in the end they knew that their work could not simply be their own. And yes, Pilons did end up sharing their odometry program out of their own generosity, and this example was about coding, but the broad principle still applies.

In my opinion, If you required every VRC team to share their 3d printed parts publicly, you would both, not be helping newcomers and be artificially stunting the usefulness of 3d printed parts by getting rid of the motivation for teams to stretch the limits of VRC.

The main reason from RECF is the cost, yet pneumatics are as costly or more if getting two reservoirs than a 3d printer, yet this year with new rules more teams will be using pneumatics.

We also participate on FTC and the only reason is that 3d printers parts are allowed and we like to design pieces from scratch

Who in vex / RECF can provide an updated formal response… these days 3d printers are more a commodity than expensive components like V5 camera or pneumatics.

Is there a concern of revenue lost on vex parts?

I dont believe they have an ulterior motive for banning 3d printing, it’s just that the gdc has different ideas in mind than us when it comes to the future of vrc.

Obviously, we are not drowning in knowledge about anything like a directive from the VEX leadership to increase sales by steering the game rules in certain direction.

But it is obvious that schools and independent teams have limited budgets and any money spent on 3D printers and filaments can no longer go to vex products.

Vex has every right to take the game in any direction they see fit, but every time somebody from GDC argues that 3D printing is not allowed because it is not affordable for many teams, it sounds insincere.

Most schools have 3D printers already, and if they didn’t, me and my friends from three sibling teams could, probably, break even on the purchase of $200 printer and a couple of rolls of filament just by 3D printing all our sprockets, instead of buying them from vex.

Yes, our sprockets will look terrible and some of them be breaking first season before we learn how to print them correctly, but I feel like I’ll be enjoying doing that more.
