The Cortex microcontroller 3 wire motor ports output the full battery voltage, along with a standard servo PWM signal. PIC microcontroller is probably the same.
BEST Robotics experienced a high burnout rate using standard Futaba 5v servos, particularly with direct-drive servos with no dampening applied, as in a two servo gripper. Once the robot hits a bump, the grippers wobble, and then they keep oscillating as the servo tries to restore their position, then overshoots, etc.
