Answered: Crystals in VEXNet Fields

I will be attending an event that uses the VEXNet system, but I will be still usuing crystals. I know that the switch system works with Crystals, but I have a few questions:

  1. Do I need to have the new Master Code on the controller?
  2. Do I need to have a special template? I know you need a competition template and ones for skills challenges, but I’ve just been using the Elevation versions with an older version of EasyC (I figure no VEXNet, no need to upgrade).
  3. Is there anything else we need to do specifically to make it work with the competition controller, or can we just use the same setup as in Elevation?

In addition, for programming and robot skill challenges is the large ball introduced the same way as regular matches (aka after 30 seconds)?

Thanks!

The details of competing & programming with the 75Mhz “Crystal” system are listed in Appendix G which is posted on this page:
http://www.vexrobotics.com/vex-clean-sweep.shtml

If you look in:
Appendix B & C you can see all the rule modifications for the Programming Skills Challenge and Robot Skills Challenge. There are no changes listed to the way the large ball is introduced, therefore the normal game rules apply.

I’ve read through the appendices. Just with different times and setup, I wasn’t sure if there was altered times/rules or anything like that that would differentiate the rules. Not to mention they mention small and medium ball setup, but don’t mention large ball setup. But I guess it falls into the rules’ category of “Any unspecified rules are the same.”

Also, I have already checked the Radio Control Appendix G for these questions, and they don’t say that the master code has to be uploaded, and the part that said that EasyC V2 had to be upgraded threw me off - at home I upgraded, and beyond minute features it works Exactly The Same. Do we need to upgrade (I would only use it for custom templates, and just using ones from Elevation is the same thing) and get new templates, or can we suffice with old software and code as long as we’re just sticking to Radio Control (which has worked all along, and I would only change if it was required by the field controllers. Which I don’t think it will, but thats one of the things I’m wondering)? After looking at the change logs for EasyC it seems like any new changes are only for VEXNet, not radio, so what is the reason they require 2.9.etc for radio systems? Just for templates?

In order to use easyC and VEXnet, you must upgrade easyC and update the master code to V8 or higher. The upgrade is free and can be downloaded at www.intelitekdownloads.com.

The new version of easyC has many enhancements besides being VEXnet compatible. It also has an enhanced loader which triples the download speed compared to previous versions easyC. So teams using crystals will still greatly benefit from the new version of easyC.
