Is it legal for the lettering for the name plates to be placed vertically like so:

on the name plates as opposed to horizontally like:

, or does the lettering have to follow the indicated spots on the plates?

I don’t see any rules in the manual prohibiting this other than possibly G1.

This is legal, provided that your team number is abundantly clear to the inspectors and referees.
