I have a question in regards to the potentiometer. If the axle the potentiometer is connected to turns and goes beyond the motion the mechanically attached potentiometer can turn will the potentiometer break as a result of going beyond its rotation?
Yes, you will break the potentiometer. The potentiometer limits are not designed to serve as mechanical hard-stops. Using a mechanism which overdrives the potentiometer can damage the unit and is not recommended.
If you are using a mechanism with a rotation which goes beyond the limit of the potentiometer you can gear down the motion such that it falls within the potentiometer range. If you are using a continuously rotating mechanism a potentiometer may be the wrong choice. Try a continuous rotation optical shaft encoder.
