Would it be illegal if a wallbot were to pin the opposing robots in the four corner squares by the starting tiles if the bot didn’t break the plane of their opponents starting tile , but just leaves the four corner mats for their opponent to move in?

Let’s take a look at the definitions of trapping from the VEX Skyrise Game Manual.

Trapping – A Robot is considered to be trapped if an opposing Robot has restricted it into a small, confined area of the field, approximately the size of one foam field tile or less, and has not provided an avenue for escape.

In the situation that you’ve described, the robots are being restricted into an area larger than one foam field tile, so it appears to be legal. However, when undertaking this type of strategy, you should be very careful not to violate <SG9> in any way.
