Answered: SG10 Broken Star Clarification

At league play this week we had a star broken during a match. It was broken in such a way that about 2 inches from the end of one leg was severed. A picture of the damaged object is attached.

The issue of broken stars was asked and clarified in this thread: https://vexforum.com/t/answered-broken-star-scoring/34894/1

SG10 states that if a scoring object is split into multiple pieces it cannot be scored. Is there a threshold for what amount of damage would constitute an un-scoreable object? A strict interpretation would be if any of the scoring object is broken off, it technically is split into multiple pieces, even if it is a negligible amount broken off (such as having a small chunk removed or losing some of the skin like a nothing but net ball).

We do have the G1 “Common Sense” rule, and if I were asked to make the decision, I would say that in this circumstance enough was broken off of the object that it changed the game object from it’s original form, therefore it is not scoreable. If an object is damaged in a way that doesn’t change the form of the scoring object, it would still be scoreable, but I would have it removed from play after that match.

It was one of my teams that caused the broken star. They also have managed to break some of our stars in a similar fashion while practicing, and I have not seen that with any other robots. I have already warned them that I am going to be keeping a close eye on their bot and if it is something about their mechanism that is causing breakage I would consider it a violation of S1.

The threshold is if approximately an entire one of the six “arms” of the Star is completely detached. So in the example you’ve shown, we would say that this Star is still scoreable.

This is very good advice.
