Examples of this type of design can be clearly observed at 1.00 - 1.15 in the movie clip Asia Pacific Robotics Championship 2013 China Qualifier High School F3 - YouTube (mute the audio!). This could easily be used to “lock” a robot in position hence clarification is sought.
