Answered: Shooting Balls?

hey there,

For the game clean sweep, there will be a few teams that will create robots that have firing mechanism’s and our team may try to be one of them. But one question i have is for the rules that applies in every vex game “strats that are focused on destroying other robots are not allowed” But to get the orange balls over you will need some power. And the balls are quite large as well and could seriously damage a robot, costing the teams hundreds of dollars. Then there’s: you fire at a empty space, other teams robot dives into it and then say “it was intentional” and also, what if the ball bounces? The actual question im asking is: is it possible to have a robot that has a delivery system that involes shooting balls over the middle wall to score? And also some info about what is considered intentional.

p.s I looked at all the .pdf files, and there is no rule about shooting balls at drivers/coaches/spectators/referees (especially bad ones) and etc. Will you get penalised if you have such a powerfull robot you knocked someone out? Of course if the stat was to remove balls from the field, not shoot them at people, they just got in the way. And sorry bout bad spelling, light broke and can’t see the keyboard, i’ve attempted to touch type this 3 minutes before i have to leave.

There are no rules which make shooting balls illegal.

Rule <S1> states “if at any time the robot operation or team actions are deemed unsafe… the offending team may be disqualified.” This would CERTAINLY apply to any robot which launches balls across the field and hits opposing drivers. It would CERTAINLY apply to any robot which launches balls with enough force to “knock someone out”.

Rule <G9> says* “Strategies aimed solely at the destruction, damage… of robots are not in the spirit of the VEX Competition and are not allowed. If the damage is rules to be intentional, the offending team may be disqualified.”* If a robot launches a Ball and damages another robot, referees would need to determine whether this action was in violation of <S1> or <G9>.

Honestly…
It would take a decent amount of force to break another robot with a ball. Most VEX Robotics Competition robots that I’ve seen are NOT fragile. If a robot is launching balls with enough force to break other robots, they are probably launching them TOO hard, and should reduce the force of their mechanism.
