The VEX Skyrise Game Manual actually specifically addresses the use of string/rope. I’ve quoted the applicable rule below.

@VEX Skyrise Game Manual

<R7> Robots are allowed the following additional “non-VEX” components:
k. An unlimited amount of 1/8”, braided, nylon rope

Thus you are allowed to use an unlimited amount of 1/8", braided, nylon rope.
