With the addition of the new colored VEX ID Plates, the vex robotics website says that they can be used as alliance indicators.

Can these plates act as a replacement for the flag holder on a robot? For example, can I build my robot without the flag holder if I use these colored ID plates instead?

Rules <R19> and <R20> from the VEX Skyrise Game Manual were updated on June 2nd to help answer this question. Let’s take a look at the pertinent sections.

c. Robots must use the colored plates that match their alliance color for each match. (i.e. Robots on the red alliance must have their red plates on for the match)

Thus, Robots must display the new license plates, match the colour to their alliance colour.

<R20> Some events will require VEX Robot Identification Flags. At these events, robots must include a mounting device to securely hold one VEX Robot Identification Flag throughout an entire match.

Thus, you may or may not need a flag holder on your Robot, depending on the event. You should talk to your local event partners in advance of the event.
