Are we allowed wings for over under?

are we allowed to make wings pop out from our robot? like for example to use to push the acorns into the goals and for stuff like that. i was planning to make our robot around 17-18 in size plus when the wings are deployed for it to be roughly 30-35 in. is that allowed?

I would kindly recommend reading the game manual. It will help to answer your question. VRC Over Under Game Manual - VEX Robotics

The official manual states that the robot must be 18” x 18” x 18” at the start of the match. The robot is allowed to extend past those dimensions once the match has started. This means you can fold the wings in to fit those dimensions, but extend them when you need to during the match. I hope this answers your question. Good luck with your robot!

Yes, but there is debate regarding if it is considered possession to move tri-balls with them. There are 3 q&a’s on it that are awaiting an answer.

The wings would need to start in 18" x 18" x 18" as stated above. Once the match has started your robot may expand to 36" wide including your robot.

It looks like you are new to the vex forum, so please make sure to use the correct category when making a topic (over under is vrc, not iq). Thank you!

Could someone recategorize this?

As long as your robot dimensions are 18x18x18 when the wings are folded down, you should be okay! Just don’t unfold them until after the beginning of the match.

Just quickly, many people are saying that you can expand out once the match starts. That is true, however make sure to have no 2 points on the robot more than 36 inches apart.

I missed this in the rules when I read through them, and just checked again(SG2) Does this mean that the robot must fit within a 36" diameter circle?

Alot of people say that, but it is only a basic understanding of the rule. A robot with 36 in wings in the middle would fit in the circle, but not with wings on the front. Yet both are legal. A better way to understand would be that no 2 parts are 36 inches apart.

I see, thanks for your help!
So, if a robot of size 18 expanded with wings that made it 36 in(9 in on each side), then from the bottom left to top right would be 32.45, this would fit within the 2-point limit. However, if they had only 1 wing that was 18 in long, the pt to pt would be 40.249. This second robot would be illegal.

I’m glad I was able to help. As @andromedagalactic4 said, I would encourage you to read the official Over Under manual to answer any future questions like these. It can really help you understand the rules and fine details of the game, but always feel free to ask any other questions you have.

That is correct. Glad to help!

Yes you are as long as your robot stays withing the 18x18x18 at the begining, and 36" during the match. Here is a youtube video for an example https://youtube.com/shorts/v-gCU4IMfy0?si=Gw7pqha1SNtyqZgu
