Beginning Pneumatics Question

I’m looking to incorporate pneumatics on my new robot, but I’m finding the Inventor’s Guide a little too concise for some of the questions I have.

  1. What’s the best sort of compression system to use? I’ve tried with an air compressor with a bicycle pump fitting, but unscrewing the fitting after filling doesn’t close the intake valve soon enough, so the air just escapes. Is a bicycle foot pump acceptable?

  2. What’s your preferred method for mounting the piston cylinder ends?

We use a bike pump, and to keep the air from escaping while taking off the pump, we use the valve provided in the pneumatics kit. To mount the ends we have used 1x metal bars (straps) bent around the ends in a circle, but where that doesn’t work, zip ties will.
