Being a mentor - a different case study

I always struggle to find good examples on mentors.

Let me suggest “The Bear” season two, episode 4 on Hulu. Jump to about 8 mins in. Marcus goes to learn how to make desserts. Watch to for the next 12 minutes.

Watch how the chef leads / teaches. Watch how they teach, watch for the insights about the mentor. As a mentor we are often exceeded, and I think that is a great thing.

I think this is a prime example of what we should be doing as mentors. We are not making desserts, but there is a lot of facilitation going on.

( I stuffed this into the VIQ topic to make it easy for me to find later)

Obi Wan Kenobi, is a good example of a mentor because he treats his student as a friend. You have to be friendly to the kids because it makes them want to listen to you. But you also have to guide them

For some reason, an example of a great mentor that came to mind is Master Splinter from Ninja Turtles. Throughout the show, he was portrayed as a wise father/mentor, and even though he had been hesitant a few times, he let the turtles do their thing and supported them along the way.

Lol it has been such a long time since I have watched this show, so my memory is very vague, but I suddenly thought of him as an example. I probably last watched this show when I was, like, seven.

When I think of mentor examples, sensei Wu from Lego Ninjago comes to mind. He is strict with the ninja but is patient when they make mistakes and his first priority is for them to improve. I agree that splinter and obi wan are good examples of mentors.

Sensi Wu is a great example, thanks for adding them to the list. Patient but improving are very good.

I think a good example would be from the movie Kung Fu Panda. Not only is it a story about a student finding oneself but also a mentor or teacher finding oneself.

Master Shifu learns from his mentor Grand Master Oogway that in order to be a good teacher, he needs to find his own inner peace and discover that not all students are a “model” student and thus there is no one size fits all to teach. He needs to adapt and learn in order to unlock the potential of any student, he must learn to adapt and change his teaching style and philosophy in order to allow Po (his “non-ideal” student) to reach his full potential and become the Dragon Warrior.

I think this is such a great truth wrapped into a cartoon movie. Educators always struggle with how to help every student reach their full potential and not to set limitations or ceilings for their students.

The club my kids are at have a great mission statement.
Limitless Possibilities ### Dream the IMPOSSIBLE

I truly believe every child has limitless possibilities. It’s our job as parents, mentors, and teachers to guide our students to never limit their potential.

Cheers.
