Crazy idea but what if you used a bevel gear to connect both sides of your base? Let’s say you have chain as well for each side, you can use an idler gear for each side and connect them with bevel gears. How much straighter would you get when driving? Will the friction of the bevel gears themselves cause strange movements of base? Would you twist the acme that connects both sides?
interesting idea… I think the friction would be enough that the drive would go significantly slower, and I can’t see it going all that more accurate, but I could be worth a try.
