This is going to be very short and to the point but I feel many people could benefit from the idea of being able to setup a password that would be required in order to access the programs or upload on to your v5 brain. Something like a startup password or a way that competitors can lock their brain to prevent unauthorized use.
so what happens when you forget the password, or you graduate and leave the brain locked ?
Thats a fair point, I figure there would be an override in vexcode or it auto unlocks after 72 hours or such that if the owner has possession they can keep locking it but otherwise it will unlock itself.
It may be situational but the lack of an ability to stop nonusers is kind of underwhelming. All they need is a battery to completely wipe your brain.
Even if you just went with a password that when overided from vexcode would put a timeout for an hour or so, it would greatly improve the security as everyday people aren’t going to have vexcode on hand. I don’t know many people that would willing leave their robot unattended for an hour so I feel like a timeout would suffice for competitions.
There’s no real time clock on the V5, it has no concept of how much time has passed.
The majority of our customers are schools, so I think this is pretty much a non issue.
Anyway, nice idea, but not going to happen.
Thats exactly my situation haha, we store our robots in cabinets. Just this morning I found my robot out in the field with a battery and controller. One of the freshman, I know who, Burnt out one of my v5 motors. Since its in a classroom there are batteries everywhere which can easily be thrown in and give unparraleled access to anyone. The student took advantage of the substitute being out of the room and the ease of finding a battery and had no restrictions as there is nothing to prevent, unauthorized, access to the brains.
I do wish a lock and key would work but unfortunatly district rules do not allow students to lock things up in cabinets. But hey maybe once we have gone through enough motors the district will realize their losing money.
Of course it is unfortunate that I am the only one working on a competition robot, and I understand that given such a small portion of people developing such a thing would be irrelevant. Teachers would be able to setup a settings password that way students wouldn’t be able to set their own, but thoes of us where hardware based security actually matters would be able to benefit.
I think the password is a concept to think about, but it’s just simply unrealistic. It would cause more people to be locked out of their v5 brains than actually do good. The truth is this is not the situation with most schools. For example, at our school, we don’t allow anyone into our robotics room unless you are on the team or you have an actual reason to come in. I would consider talking to your teacher/advisor to see if you can do anything to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
get a storage tote with a hasp to lock it.
Changing passwords causes more issues. Schools manage access. Speak to teacher.
