British Columbia December Qualifier: Photos and Video

The fourth British Columbia VEX Qualifying event was held this weekend at Fraser Heights Secondary, in Surrey.

It has been an interesting VEX season so far in BC with a much wider diversity of teams in the top eight and winning judged awards. The usual suspects: Shawnigan Lake, Enver Creek, North Island Distance Education School, Eric Hamber and… of course… Gladstone have done well more than once but there are a number of other schools – including a few rookies – that will give them a run for their money in the spring.

Here are some photos and video from Saturday.

Thanks for taking/sharing the photos.

Seems like they had a good day.

Gee willickers, that seems to look familiar. Haha. Mr. Pearman should be proud of his contributions!

They made finalist, so they did well for sure.

I only realized after you pointed it out about the lift.

I don’t get the comments about the lift… it seems like a pretty standard implementation of an elevator style lift like you’d see described in presentations such as this one FIRSTFare 2012 Manipulators For FIRST FRC Robotics

Reading between the lines, I’m guessing that this particular design was described in some detail previously… in which case I’ll credit the students for knowing a good idea when they see one!

Sorry Jason, I should have been more specific. The lift is an enhanced version (one more stage) of this.

Posted back in July in this thread.

Just made me laugh to see it doing so well.

Brilliant! Both are nice designs… I always like it when students can grab onto a good idea and make it even better.

What I’m waiting to see is robots that have a bit more “smarts” in their tower building section so that they can detect when to let go of the skyrise section. A couple of well-placed limit switches would likely be a good start, although I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the line following units would also make for a good non-contact detector for a yellow game piece.

Perhaps a lever mounted to a pot?
