I need 20 driven gear inserts for a build this summer. It seems like the only way to get them is to buy 3 High Strength Shaft Insert kits. These are $11 each, and have free-spinning inserts that I don’t need. This will cost $33, but it will be another $30 to ship it to me. It seems kind of ridiculous to me to pay $63 for just 20 inserts. Am I buying the wrong thing? Is there a cheaper or better way to get inserts?
About the free spinning inserts. You can use them by screw jointing the gears and wheels, and it reduces friction and slop. I highly suggest it for anyone trying to build a competitive robot this season.
You’re buying the right thing, but not the right way…VEX is not setup for small orders, there’s about $15-20 handling fee plus minimum 1 pounds Fedex rate. As much as possible I group orders and never less than $400-500, then shipping is reasonable at roughly 10%.
I suggest your team’s mentor/coach join the VEX World Coaches Association on Facebook and ask there, you might get the inserts free from a large established team.
You can get a 20 pack of the newer ones for 13 bucks, shipping will still probably be the same.
Gear packs normally come with a set of inserts though.
usually when you buy hs gears they gie you enoughf inserts for all of the gears same thing with sprokets and wheels. so i would look around your robotics lab to see if there is a baggy of them.
I’m gonna say that if you are short… then you are probably short on the things they come with. Take a good hard look at your inventory. See if you don’t need some gears/sprockets/etc.
My robotics lab has plenty at home, but I am multiple states away and my coach isn’t answering his emails. I grabbed all the stuff before school ended and forgot to check if the gears had the correct inserts.
