V5 motor has a stall current of 2.1Nm with 36:1 cartridge. That force through a gear ratio of 12:36 (36/12 = 3 ) would give a torque of 6.3Nm which is equivalent to roughly 4.5(4.646628 ft-lb). Is this all correct?
4.5ft-lb doesn’t seem like alot, although i might just be over estimating how much force is actually needed for some applications.
You would gear accordingly - I’ve seen lots of approaches to this. Not all gearing happens inside the motor gear cartridge.
