We have a team of 7. However, some of our team members are considering going to competitions further away from our base, which some of our members do not feel comfortable paying for. If only a builder/driver and a driver/builder/coder go to a competition, will they be banned from attending the event?
(Functions-wise, they have done most of the competition day jobs anyway, the only problem would be that they would not have extra people that scout alliances and organize accommodations, but since their parents would go we assume that could be taken care of)
Yes, it is just fine to go without a full team.
It does not matter how many people go to the competition. My junior year, I was the only person from my team of 6 people to go. I was the programmer, and could do simple repairs. I ended up winning Judges at the award. It was a fun event and I would encourage your team to still go.
No, even 1 person could attend and it would still be leagal.
In fact, I have seen teams attend with as little as 1 member. One of these teams even won the excellence award with only 1 member there for the majority of the competition.
Functionally, all your team would need to compete is a driver. It would also be helpful for that person to know how to fix/repair the robot in-between matches in case that breaks. This does mean they will have to be prepared for all aspects of the judge’s interview, which can be a blessing or a curse depending on who is going.
I attended worlds with only two members because our third cut off part of his finger.
He’s fine
Some venue EPs require that a responsible adult that is not a HS student be present the whole day - check with the EP if you have questions. Some organizations will not register teams if the whole team can not be present - generally, they are the ones who control the account on RobotEvents - don’t ask the EP to add your team.
Yea it honestly doesn’t matter how many people go to a competition if at least 1 person does. Technically they can do all aspects of a team so why not if they’d like to go. No reason to be disqualified, only negative thing that I can see is in judges interview but that can go both ways, either really bad or really good. But there are multiple solo teams in my area so I don’t see why a team would get “disqualified” if some team members aren’t there.
I’ll add that this isn’t just up to the Event Partner, this is a requirement in the rules:
