Choosing Drivetrain for High Stakes

Hello everyone! This is my first year competing in VEXU. I am apart of a team that contains 0 veteran members which will be interesting….

Right now we are trying to decide and design what drivetrain to use and have a few ideas and questions.

We are unsure what the meta drivetrain is, however from our research H-drive with 8 motors seems to be the best. For wheels we are thinking of 4 however we notice a lot of teams using 6. Our goal after gears and everything is for the wheels to have 600 rpm. We also want to use omni wheels.

We do not know if any of these ideas are good or might be crazy so we would appreciate advice. Also for wheels to teams just buy it from vendors or machine/3-D print their own? Im guessing if you create your own you can customize it for better grip….does anyone have any suggestions for that or is that even necessary? Lastly, are there any open CADs of competitive drive trains that we can look at?

Thanks!

Welcome to VEX Forum

First I would like to say there are many topics already for you to check out.

I will just point you in the direction. Catalogue of Drive Gearings
In VEX-U You do have more freedom though. I would stick to this but use 8 motors and go slightly over general recommended speed. You are in VEX-U so you do have the option to manufacture more parts though. Hope this helps

You might not have enough torque if you are going to use 600 rpm

That is, unless you spend 6 motors on it or are a Vex U competitor (foreshadowing for a 20 motor drivetrain)

You do in vex U because you can run 8 motor drive. since no motor limit.
