Clarification on <G16>

Recently we were at a tournament and we were getting pinned very clearly. The head ref was not calling the pinning even though it happened twice and only start counting when I showed her my controller holding full forward. She said after the match that she was not calling because our wheels were not spinning, but if my wheels were spinning we would’ve been moving forward. I just want to know what yalls opinion is on this or if I should get our mentor to post this to the official Q&A?

I believe that you should let your mentor know and see if you can find a video of it. If so ask your mentor to contact the event partner to get more information on how it could be handled.

So the way the refs call it here is if you are actively trying escape the other bot but being stopped, thats when they’ll start calling the pin. Going forward into each other wont be called as a pin since you are technically hitting each other, but if you are trying to run away from them, but they wont let u move, that would call for it. hopefully that makes sense…

This is pretty consistent with how holding is generally called. In particular, Trapping is defined as:

Especially with the camping strategy in positive corners, a robot could be restricted to the corner tile, but quite happy to be there. Until that robot attempts to escape, there is no Holding to count.

As a referee, if I don’t see your wheels moving or some other indicator that you are trying to escape, I’m not going to call it. Also, just because you can’t move in your preferred direction, does not mean that you are being Held, as long as some avenue for escape exists (even if you prefer not to take it).

I should clarify they were pushing August the side of our robot so we were perpendicular to each other.

In your scenario, you were trying to escape but your robot was not showing movement. It is therefore reasonable for the referee to not call pinning. In addition to the points Mentor_355U has said, the referee may be more likely to start counting a hold if you or another of your drive team members declared to the referee that you are trying to escape. They may still not agree that you are being trapped, but it’s better to try to make a case for yourself than not.
