This is my first time teaching robotics and some of the robots built by my students have the problem of drifting in circles when the brain is turned on. Does something have to be zeroed or is there a firmware problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We’re sorry that you have encountered this issue. A robot slowly drifting in a circle can occur when the joysticks on the Controller come to a rest slightly away from the center (neutral) position.
This can be solved by re-calibrating the Controller. Calibrating resets the joysticks to ensure that the robot is stationary when the joysticks are in the central (neutral) position, and that the Smart Motors run at 100% when the joysticks are pushed all the way.
You can start the calibration process by pressing the X Button while on the home screen to access Settings. Then scroll down to highlight Calibrate Controller, and press the Check Button to begin the calibration process. We’ve created a walk through tutorial video of the calibration process:
