Cubes and color blindness

So, a quick search for example images for color blindness pulled up this:

which seems to indicate green and orange would be difficult to discern for some. There are so many ways to work around the problem, I guess the GDC decided they could implement as they did. Anyone affected by / concerned about this?

I doubt this is a problem… normally colorblindness causes confusion when having a ton of one color with a little bit of another. Not two different colors next to one another. And thats why teammates are there. I expect it will be a nonissue

As a person with moderate red-green colorblindness, it can be an issue even when the colors are side by side if the distance is enough. In NBN for example, I sometimes had trouble distinguishing between bonus balls and normal balls. In a post season event held in an arena with screens that constantly changed color and thus the color temperature of the entire room, it was nearly impossible for me to distinguish the different types of balls.

I haven’t had a chance to see the new game objects in person yet, but from the renders it looks like the green is dark enough and the orange is light enough that it should be possible to distinguish them in all but the most challenging of lighting enviroments.

Good to know. It may well be the GDC selected the values of green and orange that they did with this in mind.

It would be interesting to use a color blind simulator like this:

To see how the cubes look to people with various types of colorblindness. One way VEX could have compensated is to have printed a distict pattern on each color cube.

Adding a visible marking to cubes is a very reasonable accommodation in the event that a colour-blind individual is experiencing difficulty playing the game. It could be fairly minor… a small black or white paint pen or felt pen mark on each face so it doesn’t affect colour tracking by robots. Indeed, I expect (hope) that teams will be marking their cubes with their team number before bringing them to events.

If you’re having a problem, let an EP know in advance of your event when you register.
