my preference is and always will be Louisville, but I think nostalgia has some part to play in that.
Dallas was great, could have used some more food options and the cashless system was an annoying process for a lot of people, but the Dome seemed insufficient for the sheer volume of people at Worlds. Divisions were a little too close for comfort as well, basically every match we would lose our radio signal for a few seconds early on. And there were less attractions in Dallas. But I’m looking forward to Dallas next year, and it’ll be a great place to spend my last worlds!!
What was your team number and division, I will check on that. Our data shows only a small number of radio disconnects during matches,
8892B, Spirit division. It was never match affecting so I’m not pressed about it, just something I noticed
Dallas was great but lame in a lot of previously mentioned ways. Louisville felt like it was home for worlds. Spacious, grand, outside of ridiculous traffic, and in an arguably much cooler and lively city. Kentucky kingdom afterparty will be sorely missed, i hope vex and recf replace it with something special next year. The verticality of kay bailey also made it extremely annoying to transport things from outside to pit areas, forcing people to transport carts and wagons in small cramped elevators. And as many have said, the dome experience in KY Expo center will never really be topped, its the definitive worlds experience imo. I cant say all of this without mentioning the good stuff, event was ran very smooth, at least in Design division where i competed. Matches were smooth, refs and scorekeepers were professional and on top of their jobs, and i never had a connection problem with the new smart field control which i was kinda iffy at first about but it won me over. Dallas’ dome experience, while comparably worse to Louisvilles, was still fun and probably the best part of the event despite the occupancy issues.
The data indicates you did not have any radio disconnects, or other field control problems, during the 10 qualification matches.
For example, Q-59, any errors would show here in the status column along with disconnect duration.
You may have had errors before the field was activated, that’s normal as you would have been on a pit radio channel, but as soon as the field was made active by TM you would have been switched to a competition channel.
This is the wrong channel but @jpearman would you mind explaining what the wierd man looking thing made out of a steel plate and a bunch of radio links did? Each division had one.
All I could assume is for disconnecting controllers from robots when not connected to a competition switch.
The thing with lots of V5 radios on it? That was for testing the fields each morning. There were also 12 controllers to go with it, one for each driver on the 3 fields in a division.
Yes, Chris is correct. It’s a special test jig we have that simulates 12 robots. Each morning the field techs would test the field control system and tournament manager to make sure everything was working.
I felt that Dallas had so much less to do than Louisville. Like lousville had all these cool vex IQ things and robots being driven around and exhibits. At Dallas I didn’t see anything like that.
I think Dallas had better access for air travelers but I would be curious the number teams that had to fly when they would normally drive to Kentucky.
Not to be biased but I like Kentucky much better, #1 its closer to where I stay so that a pro. One big pro was that the hotels in Dallas were much more expensive than the hotels in Louisville. 1 more thing is that the price of worlds went up x2. Our team spent 10,000 dollars in Dallas while in Louisville we spent 2,000 dollars . One more thing I want to add is that Dallas had better food choices than in Kentucky.
I’ll make the pitch again for having it in Indianapolis at least for the time that the KBH convention center is being redone.
-
Airport is a relatively major one, so lots of flights going in and out, much more than straight into Louisville.
-
Lots of interstates to get there from many surrounding cities.
-
Tons of hotels around the convention center.
-
You can get to the convention center from the hotels without having to step outside (they’re all interconnected with walkways).
-
The Pacers NBA stadium is connected to the convention center, so it’s easy to get there, and definitely large enough to handle the Worlds crowd and then some.
-
The city has a reputation as a major convention host, so they’re really good about directing traffic, handling large crowds, etc.
-
Lots of food and entertainment very close to downtown. Across the road from the convention center is a minor-league ballpark, just up the road a bit is the Indianapolis Zoo, 20 minutes away is the Speedway (where they run the Indy 500, lots of good stuff to do there). Tons of food choices of lots of diet variety within easy walking distance.
The only downside I see is that all the IQ Indiana teams then don’t get to leave the state and have that cool experience. That’s less a problem for VRC, given the relative number of competing teams vs IQ.
This has more to do with Covid restrictions than the location, as I understand it.
I have been saying for years and I will keep saying, Las Vegas is the answer. 4 of the countries largest convention centers, so much hotel space VEX will barely dent it.
The only VEX worlds convention center location I have never been to was when worlds was in Florida and I can say Las Vegas would be better than any of the others. (Dallas, Anaheim, Louisville)
The problem with Las Vegas is that it wouldn’t even come close to minor friendly for VRC teams, much less for the IQ Elementary competition. Too much inappropriate everything just driving around. As others have brought up with Indianapolis, It has many of Las Vegas’ advantages(maybe not as many options for hotels and convention centers), but the people and government there already have a support for the programs. Although I think Lucas Oil would be ridiculous and overkill for even the finals/dome, the convention center/NBA arena combo seems like a good fit
Edit: Also Las Vegas is not very convient to drive to for a lot of Midwest/East Coast teams, and international flights are not in abundance there.
Agree with all the inappropriate stuff that you find in Vegas.
But i disagree with the pretty much anyone part. CA south is a big reigon and quite close.
I think Atlanta’s convention center is a good one, It’s not that far to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and home to one of the biggest airliners in the world(Delta Airlines). Its a huge hub for other major airliners. Getting in and out of this airport is really easy because it used to be one of the busy airports before COVID. One thing I did not like about Dallas Love Field is that there was only one line for the TSA check and it would take at least 1 hour to get through. That too at an early morning flight. Near the Atlanta Convention center is many hotels where you can get it at a reasonable price. There is a lot of shops nearby and it does not have parking problems like Kay Bailey convention center.
back to the original topic i think louisville was more fun than dallas because of the dome aspect and attractions. competition-wise, i think dallas was run better for the most part. we had to travel further than previously and i thought that was fun, but considering the density of teams in kentucky vs texas travel is probably a boring experience for more teams.
Ok so this point, This is simply invalid in majority of Vegas. I have lived in Vegas for 10 or so years now. The most inappropriate thing you will see is some bikini ads and such. I’m sorry, but it isn’t very prevalent either. Unless you are dead smack in the middle of the strip, Vegas is a very kid friendly city. There’s a lot to do for kids it’s just most people perceive it for what it’s known for. Vegas World’s would literally be extremally convenient at least in my eyes. Vegas being such a popular tourist destination there is many flights, and they are frequent. A hotel on the strip is around 50 - 85 dollars and they come cheaper outside of the strip. Housing will be the cheapest you’ll see by a long shot. There’s so many possible venues all of quality. To sum it all up, a 1st grader seeing a bikini pic while driving by will not corrupt this child it’s negligible. If this is your worry stay away from the strip, but everything else seems way more convient.
This is simply wrong, sure for east coast teams to drive to it’s inconvenient, but like what are we supposed to do. anywhere you pick it’ll be inconvenient to drive to by some margin of people. There is many international flights out of LAS it’s a heavy tourist city. I took a direct flight to the UK from LAS just to show one option which seems odd.
Indiana states is held at Lucas Oil and to put it simply it’s actually static hell
That’s why I would say the convention center for everything but finals and opening/closing ceremonies, and Gainbridge Fieldhouse for finals and ceremonies.
