Dead V5 Brain, not connecting via usb

During a VEX summer camp we were hosting over the summer, we had a mentor come and tell us that one of their brains were broken. After further inspection, it seems to be in some BIOS loop with the error “Invalid Asset Table Version!”. There are four options, and SD card button, a reboot button, a program delete button, and a shutoff button. When I connect the brain via USB the computer doesn’t detect a USB connection (checked using System Information on mac). We have tried multiple USB cables. What can we do?

*we have tried with multiple computers btw

vexos needs to be reloaded using VEXcode, how did it get into this state ? It’s usually the result of a failed vexos update, but that is done with a direct USB connection to the brain.

Honestly I’m not really sure. I’ll ask the mentor that worked with kid but I assume that they probably unplugged on accident while updating?

I was using the firmware utility, I’ll try it with VEXcode. I’ll update you.
*thanks so much for responding so quickly!

@jpearman

ive now tried with 2 more macs/pcs and tried with 2 difference cables and VEXcode isnt recognizing the brain still. VEXos Firmware Utility isnt picking it up either. is there a way to do it via sd card?

It sounds like the USB connector on the brain is broken, perhaps that happened during an update (someone tripped over the cable or something like that). Your only option now is using the vex visual studio code extension connected to a tethered V5 controller (that is, controller connected to the brain using a smart cable). once VSCode can see the controller, select update from the VSCode command palette, it will take 8 to 10 minutes so best to use a battery connected to a charger for the brain. This may or may not work, all depends on what firmware the controller and brain are on, anything released in say the last three years should be ok.
