How many High School Divisions are there going to be?
On the webcasts tab on robot events it lists 5 divisions:
Science
Technology
Engineering
Arts
Math
Is this correct, because previous years, there were only 4 divisions

Nooooooooooooooooo why is there an art division??? I also think Steam is copyrighted by Valve…
In Karthik’s video, he talked about STEAM once, but I thought he was kidding.
I’m curious as to whether they will also increase the matches per team.
So the true reason for STEAM is revealed! Looks like too many teams made it to Worlds for Vex to keep 4 divisions.
First, you mean “trademarked,” not copyrighted. Wikipedia has nice articles on both concepts that will clear it up for you.
Second, the word “steam” was in wide public usage long before Valve started using it. It’s a common word, which means that Valve could only trademark it for a specific limited use.
Just wondering, how is the elimination play-offs going to work when it becomes science v technology etc, how will the fifth one fit in?
5 just seems like an odd number to me (pun intended).

Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, spock.
I have no idea how Division Elimination will work. That’s my only problem with the idea.
Sorry I was just joking about it. (Sarcasm really sucks over the internet)
I’m just unsure how art relates to science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM is known around the world but STEAM…
Round Robin probably, which is actually a pretty good idea because teams would have more chances to play against other divisions, but it would take a little more time than usual in the finals at worlds.
This is what the House of Representatives thinks.

I researched more about this on stemtosteam.org and steam-notstem.com and I think it’s a pretty good initiative. We do need designers on our team, but we mainly visualize the robots in our heads since it doesn’t translate well onto paper :p. The arts are a very important part of our culture, I’ve just never heard of this movement before.
I’d still rather be in the technology division or Karthik’s division :D.
Maybe Arts is Karthik’s new division?
I’d be ok with that Oh and MARK LEON IS SO COOL AS WELL
This is what the schedule on robot events says.
What exactly is Round Robin?
It is where 1 alliance will play the other 4. The team(s) with the best record(s) will either win Worlds, or play more matches to crown the champion.
Probably the alliances with the 2 best records will face off one more time in the finals.
Lol I think I saw that before but I didn’t really pay attention. Now it all makes sense.
That’s what I thought would happen.
There are 45 minutes allowed for in the event agenda for the division champion round robin (albeit it does state tentative agenda).
If each of 5 division champion alliances were to verse all of the other 4 alliances, there are 10 combinations. If all these matches were “best of 3” format (seems logical that they would be best of 3, else why have a second pick in the alliance?), there would be a minimum of 20 matches and a maximum of 30 matches to be played, depending how many go to a third match.
If the above scenario is correct, any given alliance would play a minimum of 8 matches and a maximum of 12 matches. 12 matches in 45 minutes means starting a match ~ every 4 minutes, which does not seem to be possible allowing for coordinating the timing for 2 alliances, score counting time and field reset time (and motor cooling time ). SP would still count I guess, if ranking is still happening.
Round robin is a great innovation, allowing more tough matches for the teams that are lucky enough to make it that far. Will be interesting to see the format.
Cheers, Paul
Also concerning is the fact that you’d now have to have the division champions moving around to fields all over the place for the round robin to occur. I imagine each division field would need to keep playing? Or maybe they would do it in the arena, but at that point it hard to imagine 5 matches going at once in one place.
