Do I need a clamp for mobile goal post?

Whenever I see robot reveals, they always have a pneumatic clamp where it clamps on to the goal post to make it easier to move and easier to put the goal pieces in. I currently don’t have that are my teams robot is a typical chain ramp robot similar to ones you can see online, but do you need that clamp in order to score? If so, then how could I make it using motors? We can’t use pneumatics due to how expensive they are. So do I need that clamp, or can my team try to make one without pneumatics? If not, then are their ways of getting it in without having to manipulate the mobile goal in any way?

Generally it would be very hard to score without a Mogo clamp, so I suggest making one. There should be plentiful posts on Youtube and the forum about making motor mogo mech.

Generally before posting you should use the search button on the vex forum.
I only had to type “motor clamp” and the first thing that came up was this

Good luck!

I would say that a clamp is needed. With hooks or hood-type scoring mechanisms, you need to make sure the mobile goal is in a consistent angle and location when you are scoring. You can mimic this with motors where you have a motor controlling a c-channel that moves up and down similar to piston ones. It is a lot slower and hard to implement but that is what my team is trying to do since we have the same problem as you do.

If you’d want to be able to put rings onto the mobile goal you would have to. Rings have to have a lot of force to be put on, so I’d recommend to try to build one without pneumatics. Use motors but try 1 green or red. What you could do is use a 12 tooth to 36 tooth and code the motor to hold.

You can make a mechanical one, it is just an arm that rotates to a specific position. You can set stop motor to Hold so it maintains the position.

My teams are doing this early season as they have not yet mastered pneumatics, but they have figured out how to make motors work to their advantage.
