Drive Base

My team for this last season all consisted of second-years (including me). At a competition, we were asked by a team what drive base we had (H or X). We didn’t have any specific drive base in mind when building- we just put together whatever worked.

With that being said, I think it’d be a good idea for this next season to have a competent base for our robot. What is H Drive? X? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each design?

H drive is where you have 2 sides of parallel wheels (like a car) and possibly a perpendicular wheel in the center for strafe.

X drive is where each wheel is offset 45 degrees from the front of the bot like this:

Then there’s also mecanum drive which is set up like H drive but allows you to strafe without an extra wheel:
