I am the coder for my team and I want to know which drive type if best, last year we used split drive but noticed it is not the most fluid, so I wanted to ask which one was best for high stakes
How big is a window?
If you can answer that, then you can answer your own question.
A=∬R dA
Where R represents the region that the window occupies.
To answer OP’s original question, there is not a best drive type. It depends on what your driver is more comfortable with. I am also a coder and like single arcade while I am testing auton because it allows me to drive with 1 hand to reset. But during match play I would prefer tank because I find it more intuitive to use (especially in situations where 1 side of the chassis gets caught on an obstacle)
The size of a window:
\int_{0}^{w} f(x) \,dx
Where w is the width of the window,
f(x) is the function that the window’s height represents. (e.g. f(x) = 6, etc)
Personally, I think Tank Drive is better, because the layout corresponds to how your brain moves to your hands. I’m not a neuroscientist nor psychologist, but I believe that’s what makes it natural for most of the people I’ve met at competitions.
Last year, there was this poll:
Things might correspond from last year to this year.
To see if the type of VEX Game creates variance of the type of drive, let’s check this out:
- Tank Drive
- Split arcade (L forward & reverse)
- Left Arcade Drive
- Right Arcade Drive
- Split Arcade (R forward & reverse)
- Other
Summary
p.s. the poll is to construct an experiment and also answer better answer OP’s question, not a re-post.
As others have said, there is no “drive type” that is objectively best. It depends on the driver’s preferences. If your team’s driver is unsure of which “drive type” suits them best, try coding multiple different “drive types” and letting the driver test them out. With a feel for the way each “drive type” handles, the driver will be able to tell you which “drive type” is best for them.
2 things, first thank you for helping as I wanted to know which drive type I should code before talking to our driver. Second I like how a simple question of opinion can turn in to a mathematical discussion on windows.
Well, you did ask a question that is more of opinion rather than fact. In the future, while the VEX forum is certainly a powerful tool and meaningful discussion about robotics, sometimes your own research is better. It gives you a lot to put in the notebook!
Good luck,
