Driveshaft and Collar Problem (Building the Clawbot) Autodesk Inventor 2014

Driveshaft and Collar Problem (Building the Clawbot) Autodesk Inventor 2014

Hi
This is using Autodesk inventor 2014.

My daughter has been trying to build the Clawbot following the video tutorials.
everything was going well until she tried to constrain the collar to the driveshaft. (video 6 of Building the Clawbot)
Prior to being constrained together the driveshaft and collar both rotate along the correct axis properly.
Once constrained they can no longer be rotated HOWEVER what is very strange is that the chassis can be rotated around them. Its as if the driveshaft and collar are somehow locked to the scene and the chassis isn’t.
she has repeated this and the previous steps many times and I have also checked. Everything matches the video exactly and can’t see what’s wrong.

I’ve attached the iam, this was build using the 2013 metric components.

any help greatly appreciated
thanks
Steve

Hi, is no one able to help or give a clue as to what we are doing wrong?
thanks

I use an older version of Inventor so I won’t be able to open that file, however, check that neither part is grounded. I did watch the video, looks pretty straight forward and I’ve done this type of constraining many times so it should work. If I have time later in the week I will install Inventor 2014 somewhere and take a look at your assembly.

btw, many posts in the CAD forum get missed as they don’t show up on the main portal.

I will have a look through the tutorial but I agree, it sounds as if you have grounded the shaft collar, check its icon to see if it has a pin through it.

Hi, thanks for the replies
I had a look but neither the shaft nor collar were grounded.
However if I grounded the chassis it fixed it, although I don’t understand why.
If I unground the chassis then I can no longer rotate the collar and shaft.
can anyone explain what’s happening.
thanks
Steve

The usual workflow is that the first part you add to an assembly is grounded. Other parts are constrained to the grounded part, it sounds like there is either a missing constraint on one of the chassis parts or none of the chassis is grounded.
