Elevation With Motors?

My team has a competition on the 16th, and we’ve designed an elevation system that uses motors, a 7:1 gear ratio, and a claw bar to grab onto the horizontal elevation bar. We’ve heard rumors that at the end of a match, all motors are “disabled,” and lose their function. If this happens to our robot after being elevated, the robot will lower itself back to the floor. Is it true that motors are completely dead after a match ends?

It’s not a rumor, it’s a well known fact and has been that way for over a decade.

motors are disabled at the end of the match (and between the autonomous and driver control periods) and placed into “coast” mode when the robot is disabled.

Yes, this is the case. All motors turn off at the end of a match. You’ll need to counteract this with a ratchet mechanism, or something else like this:
