I noticed that the new Guide to Judging now states that team cannot copy formats verbatim. As a teacher, my students have assignments that are formated that I require them to fill out. Does this mean my students cannot put their class assignment forms in there notebooks? For example, I have a form they fill out about each tournament they participate in. I have all my students fill out the various assignment templates regardless of whether they compete or not. These make it easier for me to provide them feedback as they develop skills. It seems mean to make them come up with a whole new format on their own for their notebook. My template forms are not game specific, rather give them an outline.
You are correct here. Student centered means just that. They will need to come up with the own procedures. Your template, well intentioned, is directing students what to capture.
A better solution is to have a discussion as a group what makes for useful documentation. Use the rubrics and have them find examples of notebooks online by other teams. They will learn more organically vs checking off a requirement list given to them.
If you want to make it easier, make this a student led activity for them to do peer reviews.
