If we register for worlds, do we have to submit a digital engineering notebook right then? Or do we have the time/opportunity to make and document changes in our robot.
My team already registered and we are now making some big changes with out robot and pneumatics so I wanted to know if we can still use the notebook. If not, that’s sucks because we really want to document these things.
This is my first year going, but based on what we were made to do, and the experience of our sister team it seems VEX wants you to turn in your notebook very soon after qualifying, the work around for this is to either make pages about your plans, or simply wrap up your final competition because worlds, and then discuss newer designs in your online Judge meeting you need to schedule.
I have it on good authority that the judges judging the notebooks at worlds will only look at the ones that have won Excellence or Design (awards that mean you have a good notebook). While our team did qualify for worlds, we didn’t win either of those awards, so our notebook isn’t going to be considered to win an award there.
Considering this, our team decided that notebooking about the new improvements we are making is less important than making/testing/refining said improvements. Of course, we will probably have a bored notebook writer and an open (not being coded on) computer at some point between now and worlds, so some of the notebook will undoubtedly be updated.
You can definitely still notebook, if you think it will help. After all, the point of having a notebook is to make your robot better, so you can learn from your past self. (I might not have said that the best/clearest way, sorry!)
Tl,dr; notebook if you consider it a priority (it is, it helps you improve) but you might not get an award out of it.
Notebook is required for Innovate and is strongly recommended for most other judges awards. Even though the award description might not say anything about the notebook having one and documenting a certain part you want to focus on (A certain part for innovate and create, code for Think)
At the end of the document are the interview questions, and you can see that some of the questions are probing for a particular judged award. When the online judges deliberate after your interview, they will have the opportunity to nominate your team for various awards based on their interview impression. Those teams that “make it through the system” and are nominated by the judges for one or more awards will be interviewed in-person at worlds.
