As per <R6a> of the VEX Round Up Game Manual

a. Products identical to those listed on this site are also considered “official VEX products”. For the purposes of this rule, products which are identical in all ways except for color are permissible.
Note: It is up to inspectors to determine whether a component is “identical” to an official VEX component.

Thus, any string/rope used must be identical to what is included in the winch and pulley kit. The specifications can be found on the above linked page, and are also included here for your convenience.

• Nylon, solid braided rope
• 1/8" diameter
• Ultimate tensile strength 100 lbs.
• No longer than 4’

Note it may be difficult to find string/rope rated for 100 lbs. When we rated the rope we wanted to provide a safe rating for users, but the moral of the story is 100 lbs is more force than any VEX robot would exert without destroying other components. As a result, you shouldn’t worry too much about the tensile strength when you’re looking for “equivalent” rope. For our purposes, the rope is basically “infinitely strong.”
