Faulty Cables at a National Tournament

Hello,

I’m based in South Korea and we recently held our national VRC tournament to decide who goes to worlds. However, one of the competition fields had a faulty cable which led to bad connections during the qualifying matches. Our and other teams reported their drivetrain or autonomous failing during matches, despite them working on other fields or after the matches. As a result, we tried to request a match replay since the robots malfunctioned due to external factors, but the referee ignored us and would not even speak to us. The faulty cable was used for around half of the qualifying matches and had an enormous impact on the final impact of the game. I’ve currently contacted the event partner, but even they’re not responding

Normally, I wouldn’t be too upset, but it just seemed like the event partner and referee just didn’t care. And given, that it’s my last year to compete as a high schooler, this whole situation just seems unfair. Is there any way I can deal with this issue or bring it to light with Vex?

If the EP is not responding, I believe the next in the chain is your RECF Event Engagement Manager. I’m not sure if it’s the same in SK, but in the US each region or state has a RECF employee assigned. Part of their job is to ensure that events run smoothly, and they’d likely be very interested in your case given that it happened at nats.

Which cable ? Was this a cable to the field control system from your controller ? If so, was it going to the smart field controller or the old legacy field controller ? The smart field controller would have logged a cable disconnection if that was being used.

It was the cable that was connecting the field control system to the controller. I’m not sure whether it was a smart field or an old legacy field controller, but like for one game all 4 robots just stopped moving in the middle of a match. And this was only for one of the fields (out of 2). There were no problems as I’m aware with the other field so all of autons and drivetrain worked over there, but once it moved to the second field, it would run into constant issues.

I don’t think Korea has an assigned RECF employee, but on the robotevents website, there is this email: [email protected]. I’ve actually sent them an email already, but they have not responded (it’s been around 3 days). However, what would realistically happen once I get in touch with them?

Was it connected to one of the 4 pin smartports on the controller or the 8 pin RJ45, the center connector ?

Well, that’s not a faulty cable to one team, probably some major radio interference.

It was the center connector, I believe.

The 4 robots stopping was a bad example, but consistently our drivetrain would stop or autonomous would not work.
