Is having four license plates on the robot legal?
All questions about legality can be answered by the game manual.
The game manual tells you things that you must do, and things that you must not do. Actions not prohibited by the game manual are legal.
The game manual does not make four license plates of the appropriate color illegal, hence it is legal.
That’s a good question. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t be legal.
It should be legal. The game manual tells you that you need them viewable on 2 sides of the robot. It is unnecessary but should be legal
It is legal to have four plate. But it is not legal to show the blue plate in your photo
However, having opposing color plates visible is illegal, you need to mask that.
Having 4 is legal but if you are on red having the blue showing is illegal and vice versa so you need to cover up the opposite color or only have 2 and switch them out.
Agree with what is said above, but would also point out that these appear to be used in a functional manner. By definition the license plate is non-functional, meaning that if it were removed would the robot perform differently? Unless that is backed by a rigid legal material I would say their placement looks functional and they need to be moved to another part of the robot.
A good point was brought up about them being functional. Pictures are not detailed enough to decide.
As a judge & referee I will say that if you want to do the ref a favor, put one plate on each of the 4 sides of the bot, not 2 on 2 sides.
Also… you MUST black out ALL the blue plate visible. Get a sharpie/marks-a-lot and get to work on the back AND side edges. As it sits now, this would NOT pass inspection.
As someone who has refereed, it honestly doesn’t really make a difference as long as all the plates are the same. However if you have two different types of plates (such as one 3D printed and one normal one), that can mess me up.
I would question whether having the plates in those locations makes them functional decorations. In that case, having four isn’t the issue, the location is the issue as they seem to be used to prevent rings from gettin under the wheels.
