From EasyC to RobotC

My Vex competition teams are considering switching from EasyC to robotC for the 2013-2014 competition season. Can RobotC benefit my teams programing their competition robots? If so how can it help them with programing and sensors? in other words is it worth the switch.

Thanks

RP

Hey RP,

I see that you also posted this question in the General Forum - it’s a good place to get opinions from others who have used both software packages. It’s been discussed a number of times. If you search for “robotc vs. easyc” or “robotc or easyc”, a number of results appear at the top.

Posting here, you get the opinions of the ROBOTC developers and support team, and yes, we definitely think switching to ROBOTC would benefit your team.

With specific regards to programming with sensors, we include a series of debugger windows, and one of them is labeled “Sensors”. If your robot is connected directly or wirelessly while you run your program, it will display all of the values of your sensors in real-time - no extra work needed to make it work, and no guessing about the values your robot is seeing. This is also true of the variables, timers, motors, and other features of the robot/ROBOTC.

We have a free set of tutorial videos that cover all of the basics (and some advanced topics) of programming in ROBOTC, also showing how to use some of the debugger windows. I’d recommend checking them out: http://www.education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/products/teaching_robotc_cortex/index.html

Also, ROBOTC comes with a free 30-day trial, so you can give it a thorough test: http://www.robotc.net/download/cortex/
