my highschools VEX robotics team was founded last year and was all seniors with previous experience with a few freshman. I’m now expected to be one of the team captains next year and i have absouloutely no idea what to do or how to build robots without someone giving me directions on exactly what to do.
How do i teach myself the absoloute very basics of building, and is practicing and teaching myself over the summer going to be enough time to be prepared?
I’d recommend watching youtube videos on the design process and of vex team’s robots. Kepler Electronics has a lot of older videos that help with a lot of basics to building, although some of his videos may be unhelpful to you/unrelated to Vex. Here is a specific video you might find helpful.
While I’ve not been in this exact position I can say I understand being unprepared and needing to lead a team. For this I would recommend spending your time over the summer do 1 of these 2 things. Either spend this time looking at reveal videos of all kinds while trying to connect common themes you might find with others robots, and then trying your best to apply them. Or what I would recommend is focusing on the less beginner jobs like programming, while talking with your teammate over the summer and having them do something along the former. I have tried both of these methods. The first for my first year, and the second when I was essentially the only one on my team with experience. I hope this helps, best of luck.
