I am new to the forum but not new to the vex line, so I am in the Vex corner but am very curious to where the hardware is going to go.
I get that the OS gets upgrade and all. But when was the last time the hardware on the IQ line was upgraded ? We all know that the competition is getting an upgrade, or to some a downgrade (!) but at least they are moving.
I haven’t read any hardware upgrade coming soon. Is there one coming up ? What are your thoughts? Maybe I missed a news.
I can say with near absolute certainty there is nothing coming within the next 3 years.
New control systems are a big thing in vex- you’d have heard about a new system already if it was going to be on the shelves within the next 2 years. Also, the IQ brain is relatively new, so I wouldn’t expect a new system anytime soon.
I think there was a 10 year gap between cortex and v5 for VRC, so these things don’t happen quickly like an iphone release cycle.
My only real wish would be the connection between Windows application and the Brain over the Bluetooth connection. But that is more of an issue with Windows.
But if the software team is taking requests:
I’d like to see an easy way to move data between RaspberryPi type devices and the brain. Being able to offboard processing would be interesting, as would the brain being used as a secondary processor.
Being able to add other I2C devices is possible. For sensors, I’d like an IR distance sensor.
I am dreaming of more ports, more sensors (or improved).
There’s already somebody that mentioned me in a thread that connectivity between 2 brains might be feasible by checking the tech spec of the brain. But that would be a great “by default” feature.
Note that I am not into competition. I just like building my own stuff. The more stuff available, the crazier the idea
I wish I could tell you! All I can say is that the whole VEX team is hard at work every day trying to make the whole system better. This includes looking into new hardware for VEX IQ. So while I can’t give away any secrets, I’ll say that I’m very excited about all of the new things that are coming down the line.
In the meantime, keep an eye on the coming soon page. (https://www.vexrobotics.com/coming-soon) We’ll update it when there are new products on the way. And feel free to make suggestions for products you want to see. We love to hear from the community too. It’s how we get better.
I have it on good authority that Vex is developing self sorting parts. You go to a secret youtube video and once the video plays, all your loose parts sort themselves in to bins. Now you do need to buy special tags to label the bins so the parts know where to go, but it should be available for purchase by 2027 (which happens to also be the release date of the long awaited underwater game).
