When using pro v5, do you need to have the brain connected because for me the configuration is greyed out, but when i looked at the tutorials the brain was connected
Did you mean do you have to have the brain connected to download code? Could you be a bit more specific on your question?

im just tryna code, but the box to configure stuff is greyed out
Do you mean the motor configuration box 
to configure motors and their ports? If you can, could you include a screenshot? It shouldn’t be greyed out when you have your program opened.
Oh right I forgot that when using expert config u can’t use gui
