Good evening to everyone (or good morning), as our notebook is getting better and better, and we are getting more competitive, we are hoping for some serious critiquing of our notebook. Our sister teams and coaches have already looked at it and given their recommendations, but we would like some outside opinions from other teams and coaches.
Hi I’ve judged for local competitions before and I wanted to point out a few general things about your notebook.
Definitely incorporate more photos it’svery very text-heavy, especially in the first portion of the notebook which judges usually are going to just skim over as visuals like photos/sketches help and are easier to digest than a whole paragraph
I wouldn’t put hyperlinks on your notebook as you usually print them out for competitions and also on your page 7 it is hard to read this.
Table of contents is out dated and the notebook is hard too follow without it, also I don’t see your brain storm?
Also why is there come pages that seem to be a screen shot from something else? (The ones where the background is black)
I personally wouldn’t take note of when you don’t have practice as it just takes up space in your notebook
Im not sure how strict judges are but since you don’t have recorded logs of test runs you shouldn’t stop taking note of them, continue to do test runs.
I would say in future years is keep the notebook following the flow of the engineering process because it does seem out of order and always take note of everything, the best kind of notebook is a notebook where you can recreate the robot from what is in the notebook.
Also never talk about notebooking in the notebook, I could go more into detail if you want but these are like first impressions! I would also for practice have say a parent judge the notebook with the criteria as usually judges are just teachers who dont do robotics.
The first thing I want to point is to consider getting rid of your last names and just using last initials. This is for safety reasons.
Overall, the impression I have is more journal than design notebook. It’s very text dense. Thinking about the rubrics, when I quickly skim the first time, I see “Problem” called out, but I can not readily see “3 or more possible solutions” and then no indication of how the solution was selected. The rubric calls out either testing or decision matrix. I don’t readily see tests or results. I also don’t easily see plans for implementing the decision.
I’d probably score as “proficient” in most categories.
