Our starting size is below 18x18x18 but the intake at one point extends past 18 inches when running. Is this legal as there doesn’t seem to be a clause in the manual?
I guess you skipped over rule sg2…
Rule SG2 says “Horizontal expansion is limited. Once the Match begins, Robots may expand beyond the 18” x 18” starting size” as long as you do not expand past 24" in more than one direction, you are good to go. If you do ctrl-f on the manual, you should be able to find things like this easily.
Please see SG2 and SG3 in the game manual for expansion rules
That is by definition an expansion.
As per SG2b, you are allowed to horizontally expand up to 6’’ past your original 18’’ starting size on one side only. You can have multiple expansions, but they must be on the same side.
Yes this is legal but note you will be cutting into your horizontal expansion limit and also limiting yourself to any further expansion in that direction only for the match. Please see rule SG2 for full details. Additionally make sure thus your robot’s intake is oriented at match start so it is 18x18x18, regardless of whether it would be 18x18x18 in a different intake rotation.
How far does it expand? The manual says that it can only expand 6 inches in one direction.
What is considered “one direction” is if the part expanding does not exceed the width of the robot. For an example, if your Intake only expands 5 inches past the size, but becomes wider than the robot, that is considered expanding in 3 ways and thus is illegal.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
In this case, the fish is the answer to the question.
The “how to fish” is the skill of reading the manual.
Although it is harder to get the answer, it will help the user in the long term.
The user did read the manual, but the skill ctrl+f is still part of the skill. Thanks for adding that to your answer.
Give a man the fish and teach him how to get more. Simple as that!
