Hooking up a shaft encoder/rotational sensor to a flywheel

We are trying to attach a shaft encoder or rotational sensor to our flywheel, but we don’t know whether the sensors can detect anything while we’re going 2800 rpm. How are other teams getting rotational information from their flywheel?

I use a stroboscope tachometer. Although note that this can’t get a live read. A contact tach could tho. Stroboscopes have a very small margin of error.

Hi,

The flywheel speed can be calculated by multiplying the motor speed by the gear ratio, some programing is required by your team, however the resulting speed will have the same accuracy as a shaft encoder.

Hope this helps,

There is a very very similar thread that was last posted on the same day you posted this thread.
