How can drivers improve their operation technique?

Im a very new hand on vex robotics and this is my first season taking part as a driver. Althogh during weekends i can practice my operation with our robot, there are still some problems I hope to find better solution…

  1. since most days Im on campus instead of club( and there’s no training condition in school), are there any alternative that i can help practicing operation or enhance my spatial intelligence？(computers are allowed at school)
  2. I used to practice with our own robots but it turn out that the vex batterylife is really limited and when the motor went overheating I have to stop and wait until it cooled down to start again…AND if my teammates are working on programming with the robot i have to leave… what else can i do while waiting…?
  3. last month, before entering a competiton, I found that our wheels and some parts of the basic structure was worned because of my poor operation technique while practicing but there’s no enough time left for us to fix the robot… can this situation be avoid?
  4. any suggestions that u think would be helpful or should be aware of as a driver would be excellent!

The virtual skills have opened. As long as you have a controller you can do it, ask your coach for the key and you can practice your driving. Side note it is very finicky

  1. idk really. Most driver practice comes from using the robot on an actual field
  2. have multiple batteries on hand, maybe even charger, and for motors use hotswap motors (remove screws from motor, use rubber bands to hold motors in place so motors can be swapped)
  3. Add more protection to wheels, so nothing can hit them. This can just be some c channels where the collisions most likely happen
  4. Get a drive coach to help you. Drive coaches are supposed to help the driver see what is happening during a match, call our important things happening (opponent doing things, timestamps). Practicing with a drive coach can help you improve your responses to threats
