So when your outside the expansion zone you have to return to 18 inches in height, but when your trying to score a cap on a the post which is over 18 inches and outside the expansion zone … witch craft

You can expand in height in the expansion zone, but you may never go beyond 36". As a result, you can score on the posts while in or touching the expansion zone.

The robot does not have to be fully within the expansion zone. as long as it is touching one of the expansion zone tiles, or the white tape that surrounds the expansion zone, it can expand vertically as far as it needs to.
